Or said “I had to dig deep to stay with her about that”. As her therapy was continuing, there was relatively little pull to misplacing the therapeutic boundary with me. We would identify issues she could take to therapy, and look in supervision at how her reactions, thoughts, feelings, beliefs, or bodily sensations might be affecting the work with each particular client. The normative issues about fitness to work with such complex needs were constantly in our minds. Yet, she was so willing to explore her own part in the process that I came to trust her approach, value her style, and respect her courage for engaging in some deep connections with clients barely younger than herself.

At some level, I knew at the time that I could and should do all of those things, but lacked courage and confidence in my assessment initially and put it off, and then named it too tentatively. This made it harder later, when my capacity for empathy with her was compromised by my anxieties for the clients.
