In his education, the apprentice learned medicine as it was practiced in the community. He watched patients from the beginning to the end of their medical treatment. He observed the natural history of their illnesses, mostly infectious diseases, in the environment in which they occurred. He learned about the doctor's relationship with the patient and his family. He saw the family life and economic and social situation of the patient and learned what could and could not be done in that environment.

The apprentice read the preceptor's medical books and was regularly quizzed on the material by him. Given the few medical books published at the time, the preceptor's library usually consisted of a book on anatomy and perhaps a book on medical theory and treatment. The apprentice also received 26 Medical Education, 1750-1825 training in drag preparation in the most practical manner possible. He spent many hours grinding the raw ingredients, preparing the drugs, and putting up prescriptions for the preceptor's patients.

The apprentice and his preceptor sometimes dissected a human cadaver in order to study gross anatomy and operative surgery. Cadavers were usually exhumed from the local cemetery, a practice not viewed favorably by the local population. Dissection or operative surgery using domestic animals was often substituted for practical anatomy.
